Should I be taking extra precautions when sanding an area inlaid with European Walnut in a Euro spruce soundboard? I have got some French Polish solution I could apply to the spruce first-however when I am sanding flush surely the walnut and spruce will be sanded together?

Thanks for reading this.

Sam,

You probably need a hard sanding block in case they sand at different rates, and some of the walnut dust may dirty the spruce a little - but Engish walnut is not too bad (unlike ebony - damhikt ). Usually the thing to watch is when applying the finish that the colour doesn't run ot of the hardwood into the spruce, but again English walnut is not too bad.

What's the inlay?

Sam just did the same thing a little while ago English Walnut rosette in Euro top. Scraped it back first then hit it with the sandpaper. Had no problem at all with the walnut dust.

I do the last bit of sanding with a 220 PC 5 inch random orbit sander with dust collection - the tops come out very clean ... level it all first by hand or whatever ...

my walnut rosettes on the spruce topped mandonaughts were no problem. I planed them flat then tidied with sandpaper on a block.

No dust staining at all
